Post-Talaiotic period (550-250 cal BC) (society, the “Slingers”)

The fundamental interests of the Carthaginian world in the Balearics lay in the possibility of recruiting contingents of specialised warriors, the SLINGERS. With their weapon, the SLING, made with fibres from rushes, they launched oval shaped projectiles with an average weight of 100g, made from local stone.

The strength and aim of the warriors was proverbial due to the training conducted by their own mothers from childhood. On the battlefield their mission was to break down the defences of the adversary and because of this they fought in the front line. It appears that the “Slingers” did not accept coins as a method of payment, demanding instead WINE and WOMEN.
